In een volkstellingen tot 1965 werden een etnische minderheden met Turkije geregistreerd. In de jaren dertig en veertig werden een Koerden daarenboven wanneer "Bergturken" (dağlı) geregistreerd. Enkele Turkse taalkundigen probeerden - met officiële steun van een Turkse overheid - ook aan te tonen dat dit Koerdisch ons dialect zou bestaan betreffende het Turks.[12] In de jaren tachtig werd een nieuw eufemisme bedacht voor de Koerden; ze werden sindsdien geregistreerd ingeval "Oostelijke Turken" (doğulu). Veel collegas met de SIS (Turks Bureau voor de Statistiek) die dit bij een volkstelling met 1985 mogelijk wilden vervaardigen met burgers in de volkstellingslijsten met te melden het ze wanneer tweede taal Koerdisch spraken, werden hiertoe via de staat aangeklaagd.
